Laser Treatments

Here at SD Weight Loss Center we use Astanza laser systems which are designed with the clinician in mind for usability, reliability, and efficacy. Over the years, real-life practitioners have helped shape Astanza technology in assisting them to develop laser systems that are incredibly sophisticated, yet simple to operate. Astanza machines are the trusted name in laser treatment, with higher power for faster results and advanced beam delivery for patient safety.

The Astanza Trinity laser system combines the power of two lasers, the Duality and the Eternity, to give practitioners exceptional tools for laser treatment using 532nm, 694nm, and 1064nm wavelengths. By featuring two standalone lasers, the Trinity system provides unrivaled power and reliability – leading the laser industry as the ultimate three-wavelength laser technology solution.

Astanza REVIVE IPL Laser uses the Dye-PL Technology, AFT Technology (advanced form of IPL), and NIR Technology to provide a wide range of treatments for face and body. Treatments are suitable for all skin types (I-VI) and are completely safe for thin and delicate areas, as well as hands, arms and stretch marks. Results include an improvement in the appearance of vascular and pigmented lesions, pore size reduction, and improved tone and texture for smooth, silky and shiny skin.

Hair Removal

Laser hair removal remains one of the world’s most popular aesthetic procedures. Anyone with excessive body hair or hair in the wrong place, anyone tired of tedious plucking, daily shaving and wasting money on waxes or other hit-and-miss solutions is a good candidate for laser hair removal.

Our Laser uses SHR (Super Hair Removal) technology, a proprietary technology now used in clinics around the world. Super Hair Removal utilizes a high repetition rate of short pulses delivered deep into the dermis, achieving high average power and therapeutically effective heat build-up, with virtually no pain. Treating the widest range of patients and hair types, administering treatments quickly and comfortably achieving the best possible clinical results.

Skin Rejuvenation, Photofacials, Skin Tightening (IPL)

A unique facial rejuvenation option that produces dramatic results, laser skin rejuvenation and skin tightening effectively reduces the appearance of wrinkles and loose skin for a smoother and more youthful appearance. Laser skin rejuvenation involves brief, high-energy laser pulses applied to the skin. The intense energy causes a photoacoustic effect in the skin, stimulating cells to produce more collagen. With the regeneration of natural collagen, rejuvenation patients immediately begin to notice smoother, softer skin and a more youthful appearance. The effects continue to improve over the next few months following laser skin rejuvenation treatments, as the skin's natural stores of collagen are gradually replenished. The increased collagen production reduces the appearance of skin imperfections such as fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet, acne scars, enlarged pores, and uneven skin tone.

Our skin rejuvenation procedure requires no consumables, and is completely painless. Treatments are typically performed on the face, neck, and/or hands. Side effects from the skin rejuvenation procedure are typically mild. Patients may have a slightly pinkish skin tone, as if they had just exfoliated.

Patients can see a variety of improvements to skin appearance, elasticity, and tone as early as the first treatment. Fine lines are diminished, skin texture feels more consistent, and scars are less apparent. Impressive resurfacing results can continue to be seen if a patient receives multiple treatments over time. Laser skin rejuvenation is a great repeat procedure, patients like the results and want to continue the progress.

Tattoo Removal

There are many factors that determine tattoo removal decisions. A change of heart, a new job, or maybe you just want to lighten a tattoo for a cover-up. Regardless of the reason for your decision, you want to ensure the best results for your removal or lightening experience. Using the Astanza Trinity laser technology we can deliver some of the best results at removing and or lightening your tattoo in the industry.

During a tattoo removal procedure, laser light is applied to the tattooed area of the skin. The light is selectively absorbed by the tattoo ink particles, leaving the surrounding skin tissue and chromophores unharmed. The tattoo ink particles absorb the laser energy, heat up, and shatter into smaller ink particles. In the days and weeks following a laser treatment, the body’s immune system flushes away the shattered ink particles, causing the tattoo to fade. Over a series of treatments, more and more of the ink shatters, leaving the skin free of ink.

Tattoo removal cost is determined by the size, location, and color/colors of your tattoo which will in turn also determine the required treatments to either remove it or lighten it. When you come into SDWLC for your tattoo removal consultation, you will be thoroughly evaluated and given the best estimate based on your desired results.

Vascular Lesions

Vascular lesions are blood vessels that are visible through the skin. The harmless lesions look blood-colored, with either a red or purplish hue. Standard types of vascular lesions include: spider veins, telangiectasia, port wine stains, and hemangioma. They can occur on almost any part of the body, but are especially common on the face or legs.

There are many causes of vascular lesions, and they often appear as a side effect of aging. As such, laser treatment of vascular lesions has become a popular cosmetic procedure for people concerned about their skin appearance.

For treatment of vascular lesions, pulses of Q-switched laser light are directly applied to the entire area of the blemish. The veins and capillaries of the lesion absorb the laser’s energy while the surrounding skin tissue does not. The treatment causes the exposed vessels to break down and become less visible.

Procedure time for vascular lesion treatments depends on the size of the lesion, but never takes more than a few minutes. Side effects from the procedure are minimal – patients may experience some slight discomfort or redness in the area.

Small vascular lesions can often be removed in a single treatment, while other lesions may take a few treatments to become less visible. Regardless, most patients see significant improvement in appearance after a single laser session with the Astanza Q-switched laser.

Pigmented Lesions (Spots)

Pigmented lesions are dark areas of the skin caused by excess melanin in skin cells. Some pigmented lesions are present at birth, such as birthmarks, and some are acquired over time with age, or as sunspots on sun-exposed areas. Some key examples of pigmented lesions include: freckles, moles, age spots, cafe-au-lait spots, sunspots, Nevus of Ota, Nevus of Ito, Mongolian spots, etc.

Most pigmented lesions are benign, but on occasion some are melanomas. Because pigmented lesion laser treatment is only for cosmetic purposes, we recommend that all pigmented lesions are cleared by a medical professional (preferably a dermatologist) for treatment.

For the lesions that are treatable, the Q-switched laser pulses are applied directly to the complete area of the lesion. The skin cells containing excess melanin absorb the intense laser energy, heat up, and degenerate. Meanwhile, the surrounding skin tissue is unharmed. After treatment, as the area heals, the immune system flushes away the dead skin cells and reveals lighter, unblemished skin. Procedure time depends on the size of the lesion treated. An age spot can take a single second to treat, while a large birthmark or nevus can take up to a few minutes. Patients may experience slight discomfort during the procedure, but the side effects are minimal.

Most pigmented lesions can achieve complete removal after an adequate number of sessions. Some small lesions (such as freckles or age spots) may take a single treatment to remove – others can take a few more treatments, depending on a variety of factors.

Toenail Fungus

As many as 10-15% of Americans suffer from unsightly nails due to toenail fungus. Those suffering from toenail fungus are constantly prevented from feeling comfortable with bare feet in public. The most common form of toenail fungus is distal subungual onychomycosis usually caused by Trichophyton rubrum, a dermatophyte that invades the nail bed and underside of the nail plate. The main side effect of a toenail fungal infection is that the nails become yellowed, brittle, and thickened.

During treatment, intense pulses of laser energy are applied to the entire area of each infected nail. The laser energy penetrates through the nail plate to heat up and kill the fungus hiding in the nail bed. The procedure typically lasts 10 to 20 minutes, depending on if both feet undergo treatment. The laser pulses cause virtually no pain for patients, although they may feel a slight warming sensation.

The laser pulses immediately kill the fungus, and the newly healthy nail is apparent when the old nail grows out, which takes a few months. Relief from toenail fungus affects not only the appearance of the nails, but also the confidence and happiness of the patient. After the healthy nails grow back, patients regain the freedom to attend pool parties, go to the beach, or wear sandals in public.

Acne Treatment

Acne is the most common skin condition and is experienced by people of all ages, some more severely than others. Acne, medically referred to as acne vulgaris, is a skin disease that involves the overproduction of oil in the sebaceous glands. The clogging of pores leads to bacterial infection, painful inflammation, and unsightly blemishes. Although acne is largely experienced by adolescents, almost 20% of all acne cases are experienced by adults.

The use of intense pulsed light therapy has proven to be very effective for treating acne vulgaris and slowing the production of excessive oils. The light energy is directed at the affected pores, triggering a photo electrochemical process that kills bacteria and reduces acne severity in the skin.

Tattoo Removal Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect after a laser treatment?

After treatment, your treated area may seem like a superficial burn wound. Many patients experience immediate whitening of the area, plus bruising, swelling, blistering, and scabbing. After a treatment our nurse will apply antibacterial ointment and dress the area. For the first 3 days after treatment, keep the treated area bandaged with sterile gauze and protected with a thin layer of antibiotic or healing ointment (we will provide a sample jar after your initial treatment). After 3 days, keep the treated area clean and dry during the healing process. If necessary, clean the area gently with mild soap and water and pat dry. Do not pick any scabs that form. This step is very important to prevent scarring. Avoid any activity (such as shaving) in the treated area that may cause scabs to remove. Itching is very common due to the dehydrating effect of the laser. We recommend using Aquaphor, Vitamin E ointment, or hydrocortisone cream to moisturize the area as it heals. Healing is usually complete in about 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the patient’s aftercare, immune system, and level of treatment. Scarring, which can be hypertrophic or even keloid, can occur but is very rare. Loss of skin pigment (or excess gain of skin pigment) in the treated area may occur, but is temporary in almost all cases.

How Do Lasers Remove Tattoos?

Each pulse of the laser sends light energy into your skin. We use different wavelengths of laser light to treat different colors of ink in your tattoo. As the light energy is directed into your skin, it is selectively absorbed by the tattoo ink particles trapped in the dermis of your skin. When the ink particles absorb this energy, they instantly shatter into tiny fragments. Once the laser has broken the ink into smaller pieces, your body's immune system works to remove the ink over the following weeks, flushing it away from the tattooed area. We see the result of this as the tattoo lightens in appearance. Each additional laser treatment breaks down more and more ink until the tattoo can no longer be seen.

Does tattoo removal hurt?

Laser tattoo removal typically does involve some level of pain. It's a common belief that tattoo removal is excruciating, yet most patients say that the sensation of removal is comparable to having a tattoo applied. A common description is compared to the sensation of a rubber band snapping against the skin, basically it's uncomfortable but bearable. We use a numbing cream if needed to help take the edge off the removal procedure. We also have a powerful chilling machine that blows cold air on the skin before, during, and after treatments.

How long will it take to remove my tattoo?

At SD Weight Loss Center we use the Kirby-Desai Scale. The Kirby-Desai Scale assigns numerical values to six parameters: skin type, location, color, amount of ink, scarring or tissue change, and layering. Parameter scores are then added to yield a combined score that will show the estimated number of treatments needed for successful tattoo removal. Every tattoo is different. People also respond to the treatments differently based on your skin and tolerance to the procedure. Normally it takes anywhere from 6-10 treatments. Some of the variables could affect the treatment process that could add sessions to completely remove the tattoo. All that being considered, there really is no sure way to exactly predict how many treatments may be required to completely remove your tattoo.

The other factor is the time allowed for the skin to heal between treatments and the body's immune system to flush away ink. We recommend a minimum of six weeks between laser sessions for most complexions and eight weeks for darker complexions. Stacking the treatments too close together can cause damage and permanent side effects to the skin, and really doesn't allow the body enough time to remove the ink that was shattered at the most recent session.
